If you are relatively new to seeking support for your substance use disorder for drugs and/or alcohol, you may have wondered whether you need to attend AA or NA meetings. You might have heard about Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous and wondered what the difference is between the two.
Alcoholics Anonymous is based on 12 steps which are often referred to as the Twelve Step Program. The Twelve Step Program guides the alcoholic into growing spiritually, becoming aware of the hurt and pain they have caused to themselves as well as to others, and making amends for that pain. As the individual improves through the program, they learn the importance of embracing these principles throughout every aspect of their life. To find an AA meeting near you click here.
Because AA was designed to assist alcoholics, those who used recreational or prescription drugs lacked the type of support received in AA. Like AA, NA also utilizes The Twelve Step Program and the group model of therapy. Their focus is also on coming to terms with the pain they have caused themselves as well as others in their lives, healing broken relationships, and working to help others overcome their addictions.
